Hello Math students and parents,
I would like to tell you a little about my teaching experience and tutoring methods.
Although I currently am not teaching in a class setting, I taught 8 years at a campus of Penn State University. Courses that I taught include various levels of Algebra, Trigonometry, the first 3 semester levels of Calculus, and even some basic Math. Although many Mathematics instructors at the college level do NOT usually collect AND grade homework, I felt it was worth the extra time to collect and grade homework. It was not only just to make sure that students are doing homework, but I also wanted to see how my students were doing.
Especially in the subject of Math, it is very important to DO the work, and to stay up to date in the topics that are being covered. Just watching a teacher work through a problem does not necessarily mean the student can do the problem on his/her own. Thus, it is very important to practice problems on their own.
In the classroom, I would give an example of a problem, and then give time for the students to work a similar problem on their own in class. When I reviewed for exams, I told the students that when they study, it is important to practice the problems, NOT just look over problems that you have done, or those that were done in class.
Therefore, my tutoring methods would involve teaching some concepts of a math problem, go through one or more problems, and then have students work through problems on their own. I could help if they get stuck, but the main goal is for the student to eventually be able to go through the problem independently, understanding it enough that no help would be needed. After the student can do 2-3 similar problems without ANY help, we could then go to the next type of problem.
